New lab will help researchers protect soldiers and civilians

Texas Tech's Institute of Environmental and Human Health this week introduced a new, state-of-the-art fabric laboratory to help researchers continue creating products that can protect both military and civilian populations. The new nonwoven facility will help TIEHH continue top-quality research into protective fabrics and other nonwoven materials, said Seshadri Ramkumar, associate professor, lab manager, and creator of the nonwoven decontamination wipe, Fibertect. "The opening of this unique manufacturing and research facility is another big step forward for the Institute of Environmental and Human Health and for Texas Tech," said Kent Hance, chancellor of Texas Tech University System.

Two teens win science fair gold medals

More than 510 science projects from students in 23 Texas counties were entered in the South Plains Regional Science and Engineering Fair last weekend. The two top winners of the science fair, who were called gold medal winners, were Jayton Rainey of Slaton High School in biological science and William Murray of Christ the King Cathedral School in physical science. Both of the gold medalists will receive all-expenses-paid trips to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, Nev., from May 10-15.

Murfee team headed to global art finals

Six Murfee Elementary students will be able to show off their problem-solving skills in front of an international audience next month. Murfee Elementary's team, Sleuth Busters, won first place out of 20 schools at the Destination ImagiNation state tournament April 3 and April 4 in Houston, said Nancy Sharp, Lubbock Independent School District spokeswoman. The Murfee team will travel to University of Tennessee in Knoxville on May 22 and 23 to participate in the Global Finals. Teams of up to seven students were divided into levels - elementary, middle school and high school - and competed in one of five problem-solving challenge categories for a chance to advance to the Global Finals competition.

Masked Rider escorts Tech baseball team

For only the second time in school history, the famed Texas Tech Masked Raider mascot was present at a baseball event. She led the Red Raider baseball team onto the field April 3 for the start of their Big 12 Conference series against Texas A&M. She also was present on March 23 when Tech and Lubbock Christian University retired the No. 27 jersey of former coach Larry Hays at Dan Law Field. The Masked Rider has led the Tech football team on to the field for each game for the last 54 years.

Shallowater students invited to Carnegie Hall

Two Shallowater Middle School students have received Silver Keys for their work in National Scholastic Art competition. Caity Fritz and Kaegan Cunningham have been invited to go to New York for the awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall the week of June 3-5.
